of Inquiry
I
am interested in, women empowerment and making an active effort in uplifting
other women. The reason being, as a young woman we are taught at a very young
age that our female counterparts are none the less competition and, it almost
becomes instinct to insult each other. One of my favorite poets Rupi Kaur
states, “strong women feel good about each other’s success, we all move forward
when we recognize how resilient and striking the women around us are.” This
statement really resonates with me, being surrounded by young women who find it
easier to talk down to each other than uplift.
We
see examples of women discouraging women on social media in more recent events plus
size model Ashley Graham was fat shamed for her curvy figure after being on the
cover of Sports Illustrated. Rather than being proud that women with curves are
being represented in the modeling industry, many people especially women were
commenting on how gross her body looked and it was not appropriate. Another
instance we see this is, the Texan news anchor Demetria Obilor who was called
inappropriate by other women due to her curvy figure. We see so many instances
where women are bashed due to their figure, hair, race, ethnic background and
attire that even at times where women should be celebrated for their accomplishments
they are shamed for things they cannot control and sad to say this shame mostly
comes from other women.
A form of multimedia that can be
produced to end this is simple, an awareness video, article, post anything of
the above to state this is not okay. As it is, women are in a constant fight
for equality and to hinder each other from success or to have women under
constant scrutiny and judging them for every move they make is not okay. If we
simply worked together, build together and support each other the possibilities
are endless.
Personally, I would like to start an
organization on campus that I am currently in the process of putting together
girls help girls. It will be an interactive organization that helps young women
in need by donation. If we work together and help each other, the more powerful
we become.
